On October 1st, 2025, the Nigerian Community in Viçosa (NCV) gathered to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence. The event featured a lively rally that started on the campus of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), moved through the city’s main streets, and concluded back on campus.
More than just a parade, the rally was a demonstration of cultural pride and of the vibrant presence of the Nigerian community in Viçosa. Dressed in Nigerian colors and carrying banners, participants shared joyful moments through photos and videos, drawing the attention of residents and passersby in the city center.
Throughout the celebration, Nigerians engaged with Brazilian friends and local residents, sharing information about Nigeria’s history, culture, and diversity. Many Brazilians joined in, taking pictures and learning more about the country, which created a warm atmosphere of friendship and cultural appreciation, reflecting the historical ties between Brazil and Africa.
Engr. Kamaldeen Ayinla Yusuf, President of the Nigerian Community, highlighted the unity and strong participation in the event, stating that the celebration “showcased the vibrant spirit of our people and our commitment to fostering positive relationships here in Viçosa.” He also expressed gratitude to UFV and the local community for their continued support.
The organizing committee, led by Oluseun Peter Bolawa, emphasized that the rally “not only celebrated Nigeria’s 65 years of independence but also created a platform for cultural exchange and awareness within the city.”
The event underscored the resilience and unity of Nigerians living abroad, while also fostering intercultural dialogue in Viçosa. The community expressed thanks to UFV, the residents of the city, and everyone who contributed to making the celebration a memorable success.
