The Association of African Students in Viçosa (AEAV) organized its annual African Week from May 26 to 31, 2025, in celebration of Africa Day, officially commemorated on May 25. The event featured a wide range of activities, including a seminar, a cultural and artistic fair, and sports competitions, all aimed at promoting African identity, cultural exchange, and student integration.
The opening seminar, held on Monday, May 26, centered on the theme “Identity, Culture, and Representation.” The event welcomed several distinguished guests: Professor Vladimir, representing the Rector of UFV; Marcia Elizabeth, Secretary for Education and Sports, representing the Mayor of Viçosa, Ângelo Chequer; a representative from the Department of Social Assistance; Mara Iamin, Coordinator of Public Policy for Women at the Viçosa City Hall; Councilman Idelmino; João Pedro Paixão, Director General of the Association of Postgraduate Students (APG) at UFV; Dr. Abdulrazak Ibrahim, representative of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA); as well as professors from UFV and partner institutions.
On Thursday, May 29, the Artistic and Cultural Fair brought together students from various backgrounds in a vibrant celebration of African heritage. The fair featured exhibitions of traditional gastronomy, literature, music, and poetry, fostering interaction between African and non-African students and broadening cultural understanding across the UFV community.
The week concluded with a friendly football match between African and Latin American student teams. In a spirited game, the African team secured a 7–4 victory, capping off the week’s celebrations with enthusiasm and unity.
African Week at UFV continues to serve as a powerful platform for intercultural dialogue, community building, and the recognition of the contributions of African students to the university’s diverse academic environment.
