FAQ

Where is UFV located?

The Viçosa campus from UFV is located in the city of Viçosa, in an Atlantic Forest region known as Zona da Mata Mineira. Viçosa is 227 km from the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte; 980 km from Brasília; 385 km from Rio de Janeiro; 650 km from São Paulo and 410 km from Vitória. Departing from Belo Horizonte, the main access is via Highway BR120, passing through the cities of Itabirito, Ouro Preto, Ponte Nova and Teixeiras. Leaving Rio de Janeiro, the best alternative is to pass through the cities of Petrópolis, Juiz de Fora, Rio Pomba, Ubá, Visconde do Rio Branco and Coimbra.

In addition to the Viçosa campus, UFV has two more campuses created in recent years, one in Rio Paranaíba and the other in Florestal. These are located, respectively, in the Alto Paranaíba region, close to the Triângulo Mineiro, and in the central region of the State of Minas Gerais, close to the capital Belo Horizonte.

How does the UFV Undergraduate Didactic Regime work?

UFV offers several courses in the most varied areas of knowledge. To learn more about each of them in detail, access the Undergraduate Catalog (in Portuguese).

Check out the most common questions regarding the UFV Undergraduate Didactic Regime:

How is the school year divided?

The Undergraduate Didactic Regime established that the academic year comprises two regular periods of academic activities, with a minimum duration of 100 working days, and may also include a special summer period to be fixed by the School Calendar. Usually, the first academic period takes place between March and July, while the second period takes place between August and December.

What is a Subject/Course?

The subject/course is the set of studies and activities corresponding to a program developed during an academic period, with a pre-fixed workload. Each subject has a classification within the Curricular Matrix of a course:

  • Mandatory Subject (“Disciplna Obrigatória”): one that is essential for professional qualification.
  • Optional Subject (“Discuplina Optativa”): one whose purpose is to complement training in the course’s area of knowledge, and can be chosen from those listed for the course.
  • Nonmandatory Subject (“Discuplina Facultativa”): those that are not part of the Course Curriculum Matrix and must be included in the Study Plan.

Subjects can also, within the Curricular Matrix, be interconnected in two ways:

  • Prerequisite: when prior knowledge of a subject is required to enroll in another subject, aiming for better learning.
  • Co-requisite: when there is a requirement for parallel knowledge of a discipline to enroll in another discipline. In other words, simultaneous registration in both subjects is required, except when the subject has already been taken previously.
What are Credits?

Credit is the unit of measurement for school work. 1 UFV credit corresponds to 15 hours of class plus 20 hours to carry out additional studies, totaling 35 hours of work.

The total class load for all subjects is always a multiple of 15. Thus, a 4-credit course, for example, is equivalent to 60 hours of class during the academic semester.

In Brazil, each Higher Education Institution has a distinct academic credit system. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the total workload of each subject in order to establish an equivalence between the academic credits from UFV and the mobility student’s institution.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), for example, corresponds to 28 hours of work. In other words, a semester with 30 ECTS totals 840 hours of work (30 x 28 = 840). If we compare it with the UFV credit system, a semester of 24 credits totals the same 840 hours of work (24 x 35 = 840). In other words, 30 ECTS are equivalent to 24 UFV Credits.

How is the Curricular Matrix assembled?

The Curriculum Matrix for undergraduate courses, to be fully completed by the student, is prepared by the Coordinating Committee of each Course and approved by the Undergraduate Technical Council. As long as provided for in the course’s pedagogical project, extracurricular activities, such as participation in technical-scientific events and social, artistic or cultural projects, may be considered in the curricular integration as complementary training.

How is the student evaluated?

The assessment of academic performance, in each subject, is carried out by carrying out tests, seminars, fieldwork, interviews, tests and assignments required by your teacher, to which concepts or grades will be assigned.

The final grade in the subject is represented by a whole number, between 0 and 100, except those that will have a grade of S (satisfactory) or N (not satisfactory).

A student who obtains, after taking the final exam, a final grade below 60 will be considered to have failed the subject; attend less than 75% of theoretical class hours; or, attend less than 75% of practical class hours.

What is the Performance Coefficient?

The Performance Coefficient (CR) is the weighted average of the grades obtained during the academic period, considering the number of credits of the respective subjects as weight.

O estudante pode perder sua vaga na UFV?

The student may be dismissed from UFV when:

  • not completing the course within the maximum period set for completing your Curricular Matrix;
  • is incurred in the case of dismissal provided for in the disciplinary regime applicable to the student body, contained in the UFV General Regulations;
  • fails due to lack of attendance in all subjects in their first period at UFV;
  • fails due to lack of attendance in all subjects in 2 academic periods in which he/she is enrolled at UFV; or,
  • present insufficient academic performance in four academic periods, characterized by a performance coefficient lower than 60 concomitantly with the number of passes equal to or lower than the number of failures.

How to join UFV?

Foreign students interested in mobility at UFV should find out if their University has an agreement with UFV and, if so, contact the international relations office to help them with the necessary procedures. Attention: the entire postulation process is carried out between international relations offices.

Foreign students can also study their entire undergraduate degree at UFV, through the PEC-G Program. Or, take a postgraduate course at UFV, applying for one of the vacancies in the UFV postgraduate programs or through the PEC-PG Program.

There is also the possibility of completing a full degree at UFV through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), taking the ENEM.

Is it possible to do an internship at UFV?

Yes, it is enough for the International Relations service of the home University to send the required documentation to DRI. The student will then be enrolled in the internship subject (ESM490) and, at the end of the exchange, will complete a Final Internship Report, together with their advisor, to be delivered to the Dean of Education.

Does UFV offer accommodation and/or food to foreign students?

Some agreements signed by UFV mention accommodation if there is reciprocity, but most of them do not have clauses that specify the accommodation of foreign students in accommodation maintained by UFV.

UFV, on Campus Viçosa, maintains 3 University Restaurants with a varied menu available at low cost (around US$1.00). Other food alternatives on campus are snack bars with options including sandwiches, snacks, and various dishes.

In addition, UFV provides its students with free outpatient medical care at the University’s Health Division. The Health Division serves foreign exchange students, as long as they can prove some connection with UFV. Some services charge small fees to all users, including exchange students.

What documentation is needed to travel to Brazil?

Initially, the documentation required is the passport, the corresponding visa and the CPF (to benefit from the services at UFV). Additional information can be found at Brazilian consulates abroad.

Are there any other requirements to study at UFV?

As recommended by the UFV Health Division, all foreign students must be immunized with the following vaccines:

  • Influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu.
  • Adult Double: diphtheria and tetanus.
  • Yellow fever.
  • Triviral: measles, mumps and rubella.

Students must bring their vaccination card and, depending on their area of activity at UFV, take specific vaccines.

Health Insurance is mandatory for international travel and can be purchased in the country of origin or here in Brazil. It is essential to present the Policy at the time of registration.

Upon arriving in Brazil, what legal procedures should be adopted?

When traveling to Brazil, you must have already received the letter of acceptance from UFV, with which you will be able to apply for a Visa at the corresponding Brazilian Consulate. The Consulate will issue a visa application form that must be brought to Brazil along with the visa.

During the flight or at the Brazilian border, you must fill out the entry/exit card using block letters, without erasures, and REQUIRE the Federal Police inspection stamp on this card and on your passport. This service is free and the lack of this procedure makes entry into Brazil irregular.

When entering Brazil, you must present your passport to Brazilian customs; international vaccination certificate, if necessary; and, certified copy of the visa application.

You must always carry your passport and a second copy of your entry/exit card, which will be collected by the Federal Police when you leave the country.

Registration with the Federal Police Department is mandatory and you must present complete documentation. You must schedule the day and time of service at the Federal Police Department in advance. Check the documentation and how to schedule your appointment.

When receiving the foreigner’s identity card, check that personal data, such as full name, parentage, date of birth and nationality, are correct. If there is an error, request immediate correction, on site, in order to avoid future problems.

When I arrive at UFV, where can I find information?

When you arrive at UFV, look for the Directorate of International Relations to register and obtain all information about legal stay at the University and in the country. The DRI headquarters are located in Vila Giannetti, Casa 53.
